Disable indexing services

Disable indexing services process indexes and updates list of all files on your PC. This means that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index list. The disadvantage of this programme is that it can use a large amounts of RAM and can slow down your PC. Therefore if you don't search your PC often, this service is completely unnecessary. To disable this service, do the following:

  • Go to Start
  • Click Settings
  • Click Control Panel
  • Double Click Add/Remove Programs
  • Clik the Add/Remove Components
  • Uncheck the Indexing Services
  • Click Next

Speed up folder browsing

Everytime you open "my computer" to browse folders, you may have noticed that there is a slight delay. This delay is cosed because Windows XP automatically searches for network files everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this delay and to increase browsing significantly follow the steps below:

  • Open My Computer
  • Click on Tools menu
  • Click on Folder Options
  • Click on the View Tab
  • Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
  • Click Apply
  • Click Ok
  • Reboot your Computer

To disable:

  • Download and instal the Extensible Performance Counter List
  • Then select each counter in turn in the 'Extensible performance counters' window and clear the 'performance counters enabled' checkbox at the bottom

Remove Descop picture

Descop background consumes too much memory and can slowdown your computer. Removing the descop picture will improve the loading time of your system significantly.

  • Right click on Descop and select Properties
  • Select the Descop Tab
  • In the Background window select None
  • Click Ok

Remove fonts for speed

Fonts use quite a bit of system resource.Reduce your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.

  • Open Control Panel
  • Open Fonts Folder
  • Move fonts you don't need to a temporary directory (just for incase you want to bring them back)

The more fonts you uninstall the more space you will gain.


Free up disc space

You can improve the perfomance of your PC by freeing up some disc space. The disc clean up tool helps to free up space on your hard disc. Use disc clean up to:

  • Remove temporary Internet Files
  • Remove downloaded program files (such as... )
  • Empty the recycle bin
  • Remove Windows temporary files
  • Remove optional windows components that you don't use
  • Remove installed programes that you don't longer use

Improve memory usage

  • Go to Show Wizard and select All
  • Run all the wizards by selecting Next or Finished until you are back to the main menu. Use the defaults unless you    know exactly what you are doing.
  • Exit and save Cacheman
  • Restart Windowns
